West Island Palliative Care Service
West Island Palliative Care Service
Project Sponsor
- The West Island Palliative Care Service is a non-profit
charitable community organisation incorporated in 1999 and is
comprised of representatives of community organisations, local
CLSCs, VON, the Lakeshore General Hospital, and local
community leaders.
Project Goal
- The mission of the West Island Palliative Care Service is to
develop and operate a West Island Residence for patients in
the terminal stage of their illness. This residence will
provide palliative care, i.e. improving patients' quality of
life by addressing their physical, psychological, social and
spiritual needs as well as caring for their families.
Project Activities
- Creation of a community-based residence, in the West Island
adjacent to the Lakeshore General Hospital, which is
professionally staffed and supported by an extensive team of
volunteers. The home and grounds will be wheelchair-accessible
throughout. Approximately 200 patients and families will be
supported each year;
- Design of the building on a volunteer basis by architect
Antoine Messier. The construction is estimated to cost between
$1.2 and $1.5 million;
- A staff plan has been developed. The residence will be
governed by a Board of Directors and managed by an Executive
Director. Personnel will include 2 nurses per shift, one
coordinator, one counsellor (social worker, psychologist) for
families as well as patients 2 days per week, a volunteer
coordinator for approximately 100 volunteers for 3 days per
week, and one Executive Director Assistant.
- An operating budget has been established at $750,000 per
year.
- A detailed program of services has been developed.
