Community Health Promotion Projects (HPP)

Region 13 - Laval

Organization: AGAPE – The Youth and Parents AGAPE Association

Project description 2012-2013:

FRIENDS: Enhancing Emotional Resilience & Social Skills Development

Laval’s recent Access Plan notes a lack of mental health services in English accessible to the English-speaking population of Laval, which is the largest growing population of English speakers in Québec. AGAPE has successfully completed the implementation of FUN FRIENDS program, a proven program to reduce stress and anxiety in children grades K-2, in the Sir Wilfrid Laurier School Board (SWLSB) territory in Laval. In order to solidly integrate resilience-building skills in youth, the FRIENDS program (grades 3 to 6) will be implemented this year, with the support of public partners. Up to 300 students will learn the skills and parents will have an opportunity to attend, and even participate, which will bring these skills beyond school to home.

Project description 2011-2012:

FUN FRIENDS FIRST: Enhancing Emotional Resilience & Social Skills Development

AGAPE, a non-profit charitable organization serving the English speaking and multi-cultural communities of Laval, Quebec, implements FUN FRIENDS, the latest program for the treatment and prevention of childhood anxiety in 4-7 year olds. It has been developed from the highly successful FRIENDS for Life program with a focus on this younger age. This year, training is delivered to two elementary schools.

This program encourages significant educational and resiliency outcomes for both non-clinically anxious children, and those who require clinical intervention. When used by teachers, the program returns a majority of clinically anxious children to normal range, without the need for specialists and expensive mental health intervention. Funding this year supports 5 teachers to be trained, with 450 children participating in the ten week program.

Project description 2010-2011:

Healthy Eating and Active Living for Seniors

We will develop and implement a “Healthy Eating and Active Living” program for seniors. A senior’s network will be created with representation from the seniors groups and organizations in Laval to establish the guidelines and evaluate the program. A binder containing all program documentation will be produced and shared between senior’s organizations in the area.
