Community Health Promotion Projects (HPP)

Region 08 - Abitibi-Témiscamingue

Organization: Neighbours Regional Association of Rouyn-Noranda

Project description 2012-2013:

Neighbours Health Promotion Project 2012-2013

Neighbours aims to continue developing and updating a database on programs offered in both English and French, in and out of the region, as well as identify services offered in local non-profits. Existing services and materials that match the ESC’s needs will also be identified. Neighbours will also continue hosting community health videoconference sessions, flanked by local health professionals at each session. Communications through a variety of channels (print and web) will consistently promote the ongoing collection of resources and local access points to Rouyn-Noranda health and social services.

Project description 2011-2012:

Neighbours Health Promotion Project 2011-2012

Neighbours serves the English-speaking population of the Rouyn-Noranda area through facilitating information sharing, defending the right of access to service in English and organizing social and cultural events. This year the team conducts a health needs assessment, to update the antiquated data. Neighbours also plans to leverage the interest and willingness of community non-profits interested in delivering services to the community.

The increase in ageing residents, in addition to the growing lack of younger people to provide care, calls for critical attention to be paid to volunteers who need support, guidance, and information. Neighbours aims to bolster greater leadership in, and access to, health initiatives for youth who have very few English language resources and activities in their communities.

Project description 2010-2011:

Neighbours Community Health Promotion Project

We will enhance the access to health prevention campaigns such as stop smoking and breast cancer screening, and launch a “Growing Strong” program for school students. We intend to promote the establishment of a partnership between the CSSS and School Board and support the School to build effective partnerships with health institutions. Identify 3 health promotion priorities to address in the coming years through consultation with the CSSS targeting young families, the 30-60 years age group and seniors.
