Community Health Promotion Projects (HPP)

Region 05 - Estrie

Organization: Townshippers Association

Project description 2012-2013:

Townshippers’ Estrie Health Promotion Initiative, 2012-2013

This year Townshippers plans to conduct a mental health needs assessment to expand support groups (consisting of individual and group activities) that have proven very successful in Stanstead. Healthcare services in English in the Memphremagog area will be collected into a community resource guide. Upon publication of the guide, natural caregivers in the community will be trained as the “portes-parole.” Caregiver support services will be inventoried to determine gaps and develop needed programs. An orientation weekend at Champlain College will be piloted this year to introduce new entrants to on- and off- campus health resources.

Project description 2011-2012:

Townshippers’ Association Health Promotion Initiative, 2011-2012

The Townshippers’ Association exists to promote the interests of the English-speaking community (ESC) in the historical Eastern Townships, strengthen the cultural identity of this community; and encourage the full participation of the English-speaking population in the community at large. In an area that is larger than Belgium, only 8% of the ESC have sparse information on health promotion, and accessibility is patchy. The organization has observed that mental health and social services, and written health promotion information, are often lacking in English. Habits that either promote and defeat health require English tools and programs to properly address problems relating to smoking, alcohol or drug use, diet, exercise, obesity, risky sexual behaviour, high blood pressure and diabetes, among others.

This year, Townshippers builds on targeted results and continues to progress on action plans established over the last two years, which have fostered greater networking among partners, improved coordination of drop-out prevention and intergenerational projects, and introduced health care providers to Montérégie East. These successful projects continue to be monitored and evaluated by the leaders and participants of the Health Symposium, the second of which will be hosted this year. This year also marks additional efforts on adapting public health initiatives in mental health and seniors’ autonomy initiatives.

Project description 2010-2011:

Eastern Townships Health Promotion Project 2

In collaboration with public and community partners, an action plan for 2010-2013 will be elaborated that will adapt existing health promotion programs to better fill the needs of the English-speaking community. These adaptations are based upon the priorities agreed-upon at the March 2010 symposia.

Health-promotion activities carrying out the agreed-upon plan will include the following activities:

  1. Adapting information tools to ensure that English-speaking persons are aware of programs and activities related to health promotion and disease prevention; and that they use the services available in the public system and through community resources

  2. Developing information and facilitation strategies in order to ensure health promotion initiatives reach target groups

  3. Strengthening coordination and integration of information on health promotion within the intervention programs of institutions as well as within communities, enhancing the complementary role of community resources with the public system.
